Peter Fairman's Pictures from 2013

One of the joys of the club is that customers help. Peter Fairman attends most gigs, and discreetly takes flashless photographs. We have used them on our Facebook page, but we thought that it would be good to start a chronicle of pictures for each gig.

Derek Nash's Sax Appeal
27 December 2013

And what a super fun gig it was. The music walked us through the world, and the Sax Appeal CDs. The musicianship was, of course, superb.

Sarah Jane Morris and Antonio Forcione
20 December 2013

Just the names, Sarah Jane Morris and Antonio Forcione should tell you that it was a great gig.

The material was mostly written by Sarah Jane and Antonio on their second get together after deciding that they could pair for some gigs. Antonio thought that this was such a good idea that he had already booked a gig. They did a couple of Sarah Jane's more familiar songs, and Antonio did some solo guitar work.

If you don't know Sarah Jane, then I cannot describe her baritone voice, presentation and style to you. She is truly a force of nature. So I will speak about Antonio, who we haven't seen for many years.

Matt Ridley Trio with Jason Yarde
15 November 2013
This was a gig of excellent contemporary jazz, mostly written by Matt. Considering the techniques he used, it was remarkably accessible: one of the numbers were based on tone rows, another combined 3/4 and 5/8 rhythms. We had Matt Ridley bass, Jason Yarde sax, John Turville piano and Nick Smalley drums.

Divas' Day
10 November 2013
Our stunning benefit day on this lovely Sunday afternoon was a great success, musically, comedy-wise and even gastronomically. Huge thanks to the people who came for only expenses to support our club, and to the full house of audience who were there to enjoy the music and support us.
Peter Fairman supplied these pictures (except one). They appear in the order they played.
click for hires image First up, the incomparable Barb Jungr.
click for hires image Mari Wilson sang work from "Women to Women" with Barb, and gave her own solo set. click for hires image Next up, Sarah Moule, with a set of excellent straight jazz.
Jenny Carr Jenny Carr accompanied Barb, Mari and Sarah M., and did backup singing for Barb. Lovely.
Peter didn't catch a good shot of Jenny, so this is nicked from the interweb.
click for hires image Tina May was up next, with a great set. She was accompanied by president-elect David Newton.
click for hires image David was awarded (punished with?) the presidency of Fleece Jazz. on the right Michael is presenting David with a token of our esteem in the shape of a caricature by Dougy Page, one of 5 he hsd done. click for hires image Sarah Gillespie accompanied herself on guitar, with her unique style of singing and writing. For one song in the set, Kate Shortt accompanied on cello: a song new to her, no chart, and of course she was into it in a few bars.
click for hires image Kate Short played with Sarah G, and did two sets of her own. One was an amazng cello solo performance of a standard. The second was a comedy set that had them rolling in the isles. click for hires image In between Shortt sets came the incomparable voice of Gil Manly. A lovely set.
click for hires image Georgia Mancio delighted us in English and Italian. click for hires image What a way to finish! Claire Martin sent us home wishing it would go on forever.
click for hires image Pres David Newton accompanied Claire, Georgia, Gil and Tina. Brilliant. The end of a lovely day. Put away the piano, the sound monster, thank Stuart for the lighting, go home very happy.

This gig featured the music of Eric Dolphy and Charles Mingus.
click for hires image Chris Biscoe lead the quartet on alto saxophone, alto flute and alto clarinet.
click for hires image Tony Kofi was on alto and tenor saxophones. Here he is listening to a Larry Bartley solo. A few seconds later he had a grin a mile wide when Larry delivered a most amazing riff. click for hires image Larry Bartley played bass. His solos were exceptional.
click for hires image Stu Butterfield is a drummer with "big ears". He complements the band, plays the room.
Liane Carroll
6 September 2013
Liane delighted and charmed us with a solo gig, piano, voice, stories and giggles.
click for hires image Liane is a consumate pianist, accompaning or soloing.
click for hires image She has great tales about herself and the music business. click for hires image Her voice has range, terrific arrangememts and heart.
click for hires image And she makes us laugh. She is very good company.
David Gordon Speaks Latin
30 August 2013
A fine, funny and fascinating evening of the music of south and central America, and some of David's other work
click for hires image You can see that the trio have a good time, and therefore, so do we.
click for hires image David Gordon is a stunning pianist, composer and arranger. His work leaves lots of room for the others to shine. click for hires image Solid and inventive are words to describe Jonty Fisher
click for hires image Paul Cavaciuti is one of the best drummers about, and tells a good sales tale for CDs
The Organ Trio
23 August 2013
Jim Mullen's Organ Trio has three very busy musicians. Jim is just back from Japan, for instance. So the don't get to play together very often. When they do, it just clicks into place, A lovely example of this: in the sound check, they looked for the first time at Harlan's "Spring is Here", with its difficult chord progression and accidentals. In fact, Jim wrote the chart during the check! In performance it was perfect. It was Mike Gorman who got the chart, but played it as if he wrote it. They just had so much fun up there.
click for hires image Jim, Mike and Matt rocked us all evening.
click for hires image Jim Mullen loves putting quotes into his solos. click for hires image Jim tells a good story.
click for hires image Mike Gorman is a stunning organist, not averse to a quote himself. click for hires image Matt Skelton is one of our top drummers, loves this gig.
Zoë Schwarz and Rob Koral Quintet
16 August 2013
Last night, we had music from Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters, Lady Day, Jobim and of course from Zoe and Rob.
click for hires image Zoë Schwarz is a proper blues singer, with the right amount of grit in the voice, great articulation at need and decoration otherwise: the phrasing is lovely.
click for hires image There are no stomp boxes littering the stage in front of guitarist Rob Koral. His technique is not flashy. It is just musically stunning. click for hires image One of our punters said "I have forgotten how good that guy is" about Robin Aspland. We knew how good he is.
click for hires image Steve Thompson is an excellent bassist. His style suited the blues mood of the evening. click for hires image Paul Robinson played drums for Dr. Nina Simone for over 10 years. He really understands singers.
Peter King Quartet
9 August 2013
click for hires image I have run out of superlatives, save one. Last night Peter King, Steve Melling, Andy Cleyndert and Mark Fletcher created a legend. I cry for jazzers who were not there.
click for hires image Without a doubt, Peter King is the best altoist about today. click for hires image Steve Melling, instantly recognizable, brilliant pianist and composer.
click for hires image Paul Andy Cleyndert is one of our finest bassists, as well as being a great recording and mix engineer. click for hires image Mark Fletcher is a favourite drummer. Don't let the picture frighten you.
Zoe Rahman
2 August 2013
click for hires image Watching them communicate with riff, smile, and the occasional giggle or guffaw was lovely.
click for hires image Zoe Rahman caresses the piano. Perhaps the triplet in the first set typifies the music. It was three songs sequed, from her background: Bengali, English, Irish. click for hires image Alec Dankworth - my favourite bassist, and luckily, a frequent visiter at Fleece Jazz
click for hires image Gene Calderazzo with lovely solos, perfect accompaniment. click for hires image These hands should be insured for millions

Christine Tobin, Sailing to Byzantium
30 November 2012
With Christine Tobin vocals, Phil Robson guitar, Liam Noble piano, Kate Shortt cello and Dave Whitford bass.
Christine was named best vocalist at the 2008 BBC jazz awards, which is no surprise to anyone who has heard her. Her style, while rooted in jazz, is steeped in the singer-songwriter tradition. She draws on a broad range of influences from West Africa to Brazil. Her sound is rich, authentic and deeply expressive and was described by the Guardian as "Tobin's 24 carat voice".
